Throttle Actuator Warranty Replacement

The throttle actuator is a common problem for all M3 vehicles with the S65 engine and E6X M5/M6 with the S85 engine. Undoubtedly, German engineering is considered the benchmark for combining design and functionality, but even the best of us make mistakes. The Throttle Actuator design has been a disaster from day one. Every single OEM unit will fail sooner than later. The failure rate of OEM units is 100%. Albeit it is not catastrophic, going into limp mode is never fun. Failure of the throttle actuator will cause the engine to go into 'limp mode' with the DSC and EML light illuminated on the instrument cluster. The common fault codes are: '2B15 – Throttle Valve Actuator Bank 1' & 2B16 – Throttle Valve Actuator Bank 2'.

Throttle Failure: 

If you feel that one of our units has failed, please double and triple-check first. The percentage of failure in our units is less than 1% a year. It’s possible you’re getting similar codes but it’s not the Throttle Actuator and it’s something else that’s causing the code. Our cars are complex and can throw all sorts of unrelated codes. We have seen exhaust leaks throw TA codes and cause the car to go into limp mode.

Worst case scenario, the best thing to do is switch the unit from one bank to the other to see if the TA code follows. This is the best to eliminate all other possibilities. If it doesn’t follow, you know for sure it’s not the unit and it’s something else. If it follows, it’s the rare case that the unit has failed.
